[You Get-sy] Rec of the Week
Sam’s Seven Fall Favorites
In May I had the pleasure to be profiled by Rob of Rambull, a Substack dedicated to recommendations from “interesting people… that are useful, entertaining, and unique,” and it was a fun exercise in getting to shout out the things I loved this spring. Rob recently profiled Sam, of Substack Sam's Seven, which had me immediately listening to Waxed Jackets and dreaming of visiting the Inn at SingleThread. I knew Sam would be a great person to highlight as part of my growing "Uniform" series (for those of you in warm climates, you can re-visit Will’s Sunday Scaries Summer Uniform).
Sam’s Substack of seven things she’s recommending is a fun weekly read, and with her 10+ years in the fashion industry, she’s got a great eye for fashion and design. I love that her recommendations are functional for life with a kid but still look great paired with a lot of different pieces for a variety of settings.
I'm an Art Director and Stylist with a special penchant for seeking out the greater things in life. In my spare time I love seeing art, traveling, eating and spending time with my toddler in San Francisco. My Substack, Sam's Seven, is where I send a highly curated list of the 7 things that I’m recommending for the week. Ranging from fashion finds to hotels, TV/book recommendations, and child must-haves, it’s a consolidated list of current things worth devoting time to.
I had such a fun time getting to look through Sam’s choices, and I know you will too. Without further ado, Sam’s Seven Fall Uniform Favorites!
Mango Check Chore Jacket — I’ve been wearing field and chore jackets for years, but they’re huge for fall, and as soon as I spotted this Mango iteration I scooped it up. I especially like wearing such a masculine, oversized piece with more feminine dresses + tops to balance it out. It’s mostly sold out now, but here are a few other similar ones I love: Ralph Lauren Cropped Utility Jacket, Mango Pockets Cotton Parka, Aritzia 90's Denim Chore Coat, Wyeth Jacey Chore Jacket
Freda Salvador Brooke Rain Resistant Boots — I cannot recommend these enough. They're the cutest looking rain boots I've come across and are a godsend during fall as the rainy season kicks off in Northern California. Despite having such a chunky heel they're incredibly lightweight and yes, even the suede styles are water resistant.
La Ligne Marin Sweater — La Ligne are my true closet workhorse once colder temperatures roll around. I think their Marin striped sweaters are the best of the best (for the price) and I own quite a few different color ways that I wear in heavy rotation throughout the year. They run a little roomy, but mine have shrunk slightly over the years, so I order true to size. You can also get them monogramed, which always makes for a special gift. Pro tip - you can hand wash them at home (wash on the gentle cycle in a mesh bag and hang to dry) to save on dry cleaning.
Madewell Perfect Vintage Wide-Leg Crop — I live in these jeans every weekend at the playground with my toddler. Just enough stretch you’re comfortable chasing after kids, but they don’t lose their shape and I’m always appreciative that Madewell makes multiple length options for petite and tall.
Sold Out NYC T-Shirt — My beloved gray t-shirt was covered in holes so I bought this on a whim after seeing many people rave about Sold Out NYC and it’s worth the hype. Great medium weight, a relaxed fit without being too boxy, soft cotton, neckline hits right around the collarbone. I like to style it under my La Ligne sweaters as an additional layer in case the weather's warmer than predicted.
Loeffler Randall Leonie Flats — I wear these flats so much once the temperatures drop slightly, that I’ve already resoled them. The butter soft leather makes for an extremely pliable, soft, and chic shoe. Supremely comfortable but more elevated than a sneaker, they’re one of those shoes you can wear to work and straight to the playground. They tend to sell out every year and now I understand why! (As a customer I hate when someone recommends something that’s mostly sold out, so also putting this retailer link here as they have some of the other colors in a mostly full size run.)
Crep Shoe Protector Spray — Not a clothing item per se, but adjacent and a necessity for all your fall suede shoes, handbags and belts. Even jackets! I was an avid Scotch Guard fan for decades but I think this stuff is better. I spray it on all my non-leather shoes and handbags (do it outside and let it sit for ~30-60 min to properly dry), and will even spray on certain clothing items to prevent from getting scuffed, stained or ruined by moisture. Do it now and you’ll thank me after getting caught in the rain wearing your beloved suede shoes.
Instead of going for one particular outfit, I went for the items I reach for year after year and thus have absolutely been worth the cost. Some are newer iterations of an item, like the Mango Jacket, but it’s just an update on what I know I’ll wear day in and day out this fall. They’re pieces that are multi-purpose - can be worn hard on the weekends chasing after small children and going down slides, but nice enough that you can transition into a dinner out and style differently to be worn to work.

Until next time, thanks for reading! xo
Woohoo!!
Disappointing that madewell doesn’t offer length options for their plus size jeans.
