You Get-sy is a project I started to share the things I like — a way to connect good people to good people and share the love. It has also evolved into general recommendations of things that have made my life sunnier and full these days. Because this project is new and very much a work in progress, please feel free to leave a comment letting me know what you liked, what you’d love more of, what you recommend, or just a bit about yourself.
Summertime has landed in full force here in Western Montana. The flowers are in bloom, the temps are rising, and the sun is shining! We had an extremely rainy May (with a snowstorm thrown in for good measure) so it is refreshing to feel like summer is finally here (except for this week, which includes a winter storm warning). I recently wrapped up my teaching position, so Summer Betsy has arrived. So far the days have been full of biking with friends, backyard gardening, toddler adventures, and dinner out with some college besties to celebrate my birthday.
We don’t have a lot of big plans this summer, mostly just enjoying what our beautiful valley and surrounding mountains have to offer. I’m headed out on a week long gravel bike tour soon, we’re doing some family camping, and we’ll be headed back to visit my folks in Michigan at the end of the summer. Otherwise, you can find me biking, eating ice cream, floating the river, and hanging with my toddler.
Hope the start to your summer has been great as well- drop a note in the comments to tell me what has been bringing you summer joy or what you’re looking forward to!
[You Get-sy] Rec of the Week
Finding Your Summer Uniform(s)
I’ve been working on dialing in my summer uniform(s)- pieces and outfits that I can wear day in and day out and are good for a wide variety of situations. I don’t have to think about them, I can just throw them on and go. From a clubhouse hang (what we call our backyard in the summer) to a pool day to pickleball with friends to a late night summer concert, these outfits or some version of them will be on heavy rotation this summer.
A note on links… Although I will link and mention items below, I don’t use affiliate links. My goal is to only recommend tried and true items that I use or wear on a regular basis. The items in this newsletter are usually all things I can vouch for. I want this newsletter to be a source of inspiration and tried and true recs that I stand behind.
Casual (Toddler) Hang
For the days that I’m hanging out at home with my daughter, you will likely find us making beaded bracelets, wrangling chickens back into their coop, practicing bike riding, filling up the outdoor clawfoot as a makeshift pool, eating popsicles we made from our leftover smoothie breakfast, and reading books in the shade. Does this outfit make me feel like I’m back at summer camp in the 90’s? Yes, and I’m not complaining. It is light enough to feel cool on hot summer days, but durable enough to handle whatever craft or snack project can be thrown at it.
The Strapcap is a fun throwback that is perfectly at home in the backyard, in the mountains, on the river, or around town. I’ve been spotting them everywhere in Missoula!
Jungmaven is a company I’ve worn for years. I love their cropped tanks and lorel tees. They are lightweight in the heat and are super durable and stand the test of time. Heads up for the Missoulians out there- you can find their hemp clothing locally at The General Public.
This spring, when I saw these pants featured on TOGS, I had to order them. I loved Gramicci in the 90’s during my summer camp days, and I love them now.
And, similar to the Chacos we all loved, local Missoula company Bedrock Sandals makes a fantastic sandal for living near mountains, water, or a local brewery. These are great for biking to the swimming hole, jumping in, and pedaling downtown for ice cream.
Summer Outdoor Concert
Lucky for Western Montana, we have an amazing outdoor music venue, the Kettlehouse Amphitheater. It is a beautiful venue with lawn, seat, and pit areas, all situated on the banks of the Blackfoot River. Seeing great music just minutes from our home during the warmer months is another perk of living her. This is what you’ll find me in 99% of the time at the amp- from a hat to protect from the evening sunset to the perfect cell phone/wallet bag, to hemp jellies that won’t give you blisters as you walk from parking to the venue and back. Side note: I most recently saw Charley Crockett in this exact outfit, it was the perfect thing for the evening.
This palm hat is one item I don’t own, but I couldn’t find my trusty straw hat and this one looks like a great stand in.
I found this tank by way of the Lucky Sweater App. Summer staple, both the tank and the app for trading clothes you don’t wear for clothes you will! These jelly sandals were also found through the app and are made of 100% recycled plastic and hemp and are so comfortable. No rigid plastic rubbing, no blisters.
I love everything Le Bon Shoppe. These pants drape so well, hit at the perfect place on my leg, and are super versatile.
One of my most stylish friends (hey Caroline!) introduced me to Lindquist. My first item is a Pal (pictured above) and it is perfect for carrying just the essentials- phone, cash, and a card. I’m eyeing their other bags as well…
Athletic (Athleisure) Pursuits
I’m trying not to make tennis and pickleball my whole personality this summer, but I am not sure I’m doing a great job of it. I recently played pickleball with some friends for the first time, and I LOVED IT. I cannot wait to play again. It is so social and fun! Also, I know that I’m at least five years behind on the pickleball bandwagon, but I’m all in now that I’ve gotten to give it a go!
This Blackthroated Mercantile hat showed up in my feed one day, and I couldn’t get the ripstop nylon and great design off my mind. I ended up getting this for myself for my birthday, and I’ve worn it almost daily. The perfect light-weight hat for summer- appropriate for a Dead show at the Sphere or floating the river into town.
Wild Rye is a great women-run mountain bike apparel company. Although they’re focused on the bike world, I’ve found their clothing to be well suited to any outdoor pursuits.
Admittedly, I don’t own this skort or these sneakers but they’ve both been recommended to me. If you own either- let me know what you think! Our family has a a few Free Fly garments and they hold up in the summer sun and water really well.
Beach Day/Pool Club
We have a few great swimming holes near Missoula and a great pool for kids. You’ll find me in these four items just about every day in the summer months, and you can bet they’ll all be the first packed when we head to Lake Michigan in August.
This Baggu packable sunhat isn’t made by Baggu anymore as far as I can tell, but if you can find it online, I highly recommend. It is comically large in diameter but fits a wide variety of heads. Protect your skin!
Love everything NPL makes. I’ve gotten a couple dresses through… you guessed it, the Lucky Sweater App. Dries quickly when you’re at the pool or the beach, a great cover up when your sunscreen supply runs out.
I own two Left on Friday swimsuits- the one piece Sunday Suit, suitable for chasing a toddler, and the Pool Days top and High Tide bottom. These have stood up to the rigors of river swims and pool hangs.
I’d love to highlight YOUR summer uniform! Please leave a comment or send me a quick message if you have a summer uniform I should highlight.
Until next time, thanks for reading!
